HISTORY

The first Wreaths Across America (WAA) ceremony at Mounds National Cemetery was in 2007.

What began in 1992 with a trailer load of wreaths, decorated by volunteers and laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery will now become a new mission to Remember – Honor – Teach
the value of freedom in the world today.

In creating Wreaths Across America, it was the wish of Morrill and Karen Worcester to bring children and Veterans together, as the ideal way of expressing appreciation for the past, present, and future sacrifices our Veterans (and their families) make for this country.

This year, the “Wreaths Across America” program is to be conducted at national cemeteries.

2011 will mark the 19th anniversary of holiday wreaths being sent from the State of Maine to Arlington National Cemetery. Each year the folks at Worcester Wreath Company make and decorate wreaths that adorn over 5000 headstones of our Nations’s fallen heroes – in what has become an annual event coordinated with the Cemetery Administration and the Maine State Society.

Row after row of bleached white stones, with evergreen wreaths and red bows – it is a stirring image to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

What started over 15 years ago, as one’s man’s dream to honor Veterans with maine wreaths for the holidays, has become an annual event cherished by many. Humbled with a new understanding about the impact the Arlington Wreath Project has made, not only in honoring the dead, but recognizing the sacrifices of the living, Morrill Worcester – President of Worcester Wreath Company committed himself to doing more, by reaching out across the country.

Our goal is to expand the recognition of those who serve our country, both past, present, and future, as well as their families who deserve our support. Without the sacrifices of our veterans, there would be no opportunity to enjoy the freedoms, the life we live today.

Wreaths Across America

Here at Mound City National Cemetery the Preservation Commission holds the Wreaths Across America ceremony. This is held in December (date to be announced) usually the second Saturday. It begins at 11:00 am here at Mound City. All national cemeterys and some others all have the ceremony starting at the same time, 12:00pm eastern time. At this ceremony we mimic Arlington National Cemetery by placing wreaths on the graves on our fallen veterans. We offer you the opportunity to participate buy purchasing a wreath thru our link provided. You may buy as many wreaths you want by the individual or your group or organization. We sell individual wreaths at $15.00 other prices vary from there. All are welcome to attend, we hope to see you there.

We are proud to serve you any way we can. We offer this site for you to post blogs, comments, ideas, questions. We offer you the opportunity to buy things from MCNCPC, like hats, pins, wreaths, cemetery’s DVDs and many other cemetery and patriotic items. Please keep all comments and blogs clean and pertinent to Wreaths Across America, Memorial Day, and to the Preservation Commission.

We are here to offer you the best experience possible for blogging, questions and comments concerning Wreaths Across America at MCNC. We hold a Wreaths Across America ceremony every year. It is in December usually the second Saturday (date to be announced), all are welcome to attend. You can participate by buying a wreath and sponsoring that wreath for what ever grave you desire, and place it on that grave. Wreaths sell for $15.00 and we provide contact’s for you. We have individual Holiday Wreaths, or for groups as well, and other offers. We have contact information to the Mound City National Cemetery Preservation Commission’s website, and to National Wreaths Across America’s website.

Every year we also sponsor our Memorial Day ceremony. Held on the Saturday before Memorial Day, this is a very big event. We have a guest speaker, Honor Guard, reenactors and canons, as we provide a flag raising, twenty-one gun salute, and taps. This is a very moving and emotional event. People from all walks of life doctors, lawyers, farmers, business owners, bikers, just about anyone you can think of come down and participate every year.

MEMORIAL DAY EVENT

May 28th is the day we all come together at the Mound City National Cemetery for our annual Memorial Day ceremony. It begins at 10:00am and ends around 11:00. All are welcome to attend. Following this event we have the Sons of Confederate Veterans ceremony, beginning at 11:30 all are welcome.
